WHAT:   An interactive workshop on paper sculptures with Carlos Gomez.  Carlos is a Colombian artist who trained in Colombia, Mexico and Canada. He learned traditional folkloric Mexican papier maché techniques during his time there, and was commissioned to create a Day of the Dead papier maché mask and sculpture parade.  He will be sharing these techniques, including wire structure bases and paper modelling.

Participants can expect to learn new techniques and create their own sculpture with the guidance of Carlos.

MATERIALS

Materials will be provided.  Participants should should bring work gloves for handling the wire and wear clothing which they do not mind getting dirty.

INSTRUCTOR: Carlos Gomez 

Winner of NAOPA’s 2016 Main & Station Award Carlos Gomez resides in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He is a member of the Nova Scotia Printmakers and works primarily in printmaking, drawing and painting. His work is influenced by the vanguards of the European modern art movement as well as the pre-hispanic artwork of Latin America. The work is figurative, erotic and surreal.

***  Carlos currently has an exhibition, Erotic Landscapes, in the main and case galleries of The Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing, in Dartmouth. The show remains open until June 3 and he will be giving an Artist Talk on May 19 at 2pm. 

Carlos has studied at the Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Autónoma de México, and Bishop’s University and has a degree in Fine Arts.  He is an active artist who has shown work professionally in Canada, Mexico and Colombia. Prominent shows include the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, Colombia, the William Spratling Museum in Taxco, México,  a solo show in Galería Casa Grau in Bogotá, Colombia, and the 2016 solo exhibition Artificial Paradises at dis.cord gal.ler.y in Lunenberg.

Gomez is a full time artist who is passionate about sharing his knowledge with curious learners and has experience as an art teacher in various settings including schools and long term care facilities.  He splits his time between Canada and Colombia and is currently in the process of developing an artist residency program at his studio in Colombia.  His printmaking studio, Plancha Perdida, is in Villeta, Cundinamarca, surrounded by mountains, fruits and tropical birds.
