Susan is a painter whose canvases of vibrant dancers inspire smiles and laughter. Scenes of impassioned dancers in crowded dance halls, swinging to their own rhythms summon nostalgic times and practically dance right off the canvas. From professional dancers to dancers at heart Susan’s work is continually praised for the feeling of well being it evokes.

Her love of Maine and the area she lives is evident in her colorful landscapes, seascapes and paintings of people working and playing.

In the fall of 2010 a new series of giant vegetables began as a direct result of illustrating the Home Port Cookbook which was released in 2011. Susan has also designed various posters for festivals such as theNorth Atlantic Blues Festival and the Maine Celtic Festival and she welcomes commissions on a variety of themes.

STW_shortcakeIn the summer of 2002, after having taught elementary art for 15 years, Susan opened High Street Studio & Gallery in a historic building of downtown Belfast where she has a seasonal gallery and teaches painting workshops. She has recently earned the title of Golden Artist Educator by being one of 18  artist/workshop instructors chosen to participate in an intensive week long workshop learning about the acrylic products created by Golden Artist Colors, a leading manufacturer of acrylic paints.

Her work is in private collections throughout the United States, in Canada, Europe and Australia.

For Body and Light : Parrsboro to Montreal to New York and beyond

You may have seen poet Ian Ferrier, choreographer Stephanie Morin-Robert and the dancers of For Body and Light, Linnea Gwiazda, Marie-Pier Gilbert and Marie-France Jacques, during their residency in Parrsboro last summer, a visit which culminated in Coming and Going, a contemporary performance inspired by historic Parrsboro and the movement of the tides in the Minas Basin.

Much as the tides which inspired it, the piece which began in Parrsboro seems to transform with each performance.

Their most recent version, which also included dancers Alexia Martel and Allison Burns, was a series of performances from March 1st through 7th at The Kraine Theater as part of the 2014 Frigid New York Festival. The show received great reviews (http://thehappiestmedium.com/2014/03/for-body-and-light-2014-frigid-new-york-festival/ and http://www.theasy.com/Reviews/2014/F/forbodyandlight.php).

Their next performance will be at VERSe FEST in Ottawa on March 27th at the Knox Presbyterian Church. For more information on that event https://www.facebook.com/events/408825385920299/

On Saturday, December 14th at 4 p.m. at Main & Station’s secondfloor gallery don’t miss the book launch and exhibition of original artwork for Krista Wells’ latest publication, DOG-EARED JOURNALS – art and observations from a dog living in Portugal.

Inspired by her frequent travels in Portugal, the story is told through the eyes of Wells’ alter ego, a street dog and artist named Ruca. Ruca lives in a quiet village on the south coast of Portugal and the book incorporates details and illustrations from journals including sketches, paintings, and anecdotes.

DOG-EARED JOURNALS shows readers the world through Ruca’s eyes as he navigates the cobbled streets and rugged clifftops of his life. His perspective is fresh, four-legged, and often funny.

Each page is lavishly illustrated using a variety of techniques including pen and ink, watercolour, coloured pencil, photography, relief printing and more. Part travelogue, part artist’s journal, this book will appeal to artists, travelers, animal-lovers and those who simply have a curiosity about the world.

DOG-EARED JOURNALS ($19.95 paperback) will be available through amazon.com in early 2014. In the meantime it is available at Main & Station, directly from the author or through her website, www.kristawells.ca  Digital copies ($9.99) may be purchased through www.blurb.ca.
