Painting with Jane Zdansky

2 Horse Butts, Jane Zdansky

2 Horse Butts

Jane Zdansky is an artist living and working in St-Henri, a vibrant artistic neighbourhood in Montreal. She has been painting since she was a child and today her art addresses a range of issues concerning biodiversity, such as the depletion of fish stocks, and most recently, the removal of homes and horses from Griffintown.

Scrapped, Jane Zdansky

Scrapped

From 2006 to 2009 Zdansky organized art-walks in St-Henri, inviting the public to explore the many artist studios in her area. In the final edition of the art walk, well over 600 people came out to explore the 50 open art studios all within walking distance of each other. In 2011, as part of Urban Occupations, Zdansky created Scrapped, a monument in the form of a life size horse, to the Griffintown Horse Palace. In May 2012 Zdansky organized over 70 individuals in a community workshop/ fundraiser, Pour mieux nous connaître, based on self-portraiture. Also in 2012 she organized the Griffintown Horse Palace Fundraiser which involved 10 artists creating works of art on site for a silent auction.

For years Zdansky has been spending part of each summer on the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia and has expressed a desire to eventually live here. She holds a B.Sc. from McGill University and a B.F.A from Concordia University and has been exhibiting work since 1999. She works primarily as a painter and more of her work can be viewed at www.janezdansky.com.

At the end of July Zdansky will be here in Parrsboro to teach a 3-day acrylic painting workshop focused on self-portraiture. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced painters. Self –portraiture has been used for centuries as a venue for artistic expression. Through use of colour, line, stroke intensity, et cetera, a self-portrait allows for the personality and mood of an individual to come through. Done on a small scale, self-portraits can be both fun and challenging at the same time.

At the end of the workshop, Main & Station will mount an exhibition of the works created.

Coming this June: Photography Workshops with Lawrence R. Nicoll

Lawrence-Nicoll

Lawrence R. Nicoll is a maritime landscape photographer whose work is part of many personal and corporate collections.

Lawrence was the featured photographer at the 2010 Sandpiper Festival in Dorchester, N.B., is a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals), and is currently shooting images for the Chignecto Parks System. His photographs have been published in magazines such as Saltscapes, Toronto Life, Intrepid and Driver, used by Newfoundland Tourism, turned into huge murals at the Fundy Geological Museum, and shown on Global Maritimes TV. To see his work, visit his website.

Lawrence spent his youth in fields, forests, rivers and creeks and has always been astounded at the beauty so many take for granted. For over 30 years he has been striving to capture and share his appreciation of the natural world through photography. In the late 70’s Lawrence began teaching courses and finds instructing others a rewarding way to pass on his enthusiasm and knowledge. Since 2000 he has provided graphics and fire training to firefighters and, since retiring to Nova Scotia in 2008, he has given a number of general photography and photoshop courses.

In cooperation with Main & Station Nonesuch Kickshaws, this June Lawrence will be teaching three photography workshops. Whether you simply want to become better acquainted with the basics of digital photography or whether you are looking for some guided shooting experience in the field, there is a course for you. Click on the links below or visit the Workshop page for full course descriptions and information on how to register:

Weekend Photo Seminar – This full weekend workshop includes classroom instruction, a location shoot and an in class critique and discussion.

Mini Photography Workshop – The mini workshop includes a Friday evening meet & greet with a brief discussion of composition fundamentals which is followed on Saturday by an all day guided location shoot from Parrsboro to Apple River.

Digital Photography Course (2 hours per evening over 4 evenings: June 3, 5, 10 & 12) Aimed at beginner to intermediate photographers, this course is for those who are interested in learning to improve their skills and gain a better understanding of both photography and their camera. Automatic settings will be covered but those with camera settings such as A/Av & S/Tv (for Aperture and Shutter control) will receive the most benefit.

We will host an exhibition of student photographs in the fall.

Each student will be invited to show some work.

Photoshop courses are also available. Please send us an email if you are interested and we will schedule a course if there is enough demand.
