A collection of dresses recovered from the attic of an old store in Advocate Harbour is the subject of a series of works on paper by Catherine MacLean. The circa 1950 dresses had been owned by the storekeeper and purveyor of all good things, Maurita Murphy. The were discovered by MacLean in 2006 when she moved her studio into the building which had been vacant for almost a decade.
This work was originally exhibited under the title ‘the dress rehearsal’ on February 14th, 2010 at The Old Murphy Store in Advocate, NS and again at the Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth NS during March of that year. The current installation of these drawings, retitled ‘Redress’, celebrates the exciting new art space, Main & Station, which has revived Parrsboro’s landmark post office building..
Catherine MacLean is an artist and teacher who divides her time between Advocate Harbour and Halifax, Nova Scotia
